The Types of Reading

Reading is another receptive skill besides listening skill. As receptive skill, comprehension is mainly needed. The understanding and getting information from the text can be gained by some different ways that indicate the reading types.
Based on Grellet (2001: 4), the ways of reading are skimming, scanning, extensive reading, and intensive reading. Meanwhile, Harmer (2002: 210-214) classifies the ways of reading into shorter classification it is divided into two general types of ways, the extensive and intensive reading.
Extensive reading as Harmer writes, to prove successful extensive reading program students should read material which they can understand. If they are struggling to understand every word, they can hardly be reading for pleasure and it is the main goal of this activity. Extensive reading especially where students are reading material written specially at their level, it has a number of benefits for the development of students’ language. The students are given tasks of reading text by allowing them to choose their own reading texts, following their own likes and interests, they will not able to read the same texts at once. Therefore, the teacher should encourage them to report back on their reading in a number of ways.
The second way is intensive reading. By this type of reading, the teacher has to prepare the interest topic and tasks. The teacher plays role as the organizer, the observer, the feedback organizer, and the prompter.
