What is reading skill?

Reading is one of macro skills beside listening, speaking and writing. Many definitions of reading are proposed by authors Sudarso (in Hidayat, 2011: 12) writes,

“ reading is the complex activites, which involves separating acts. Complex activites and separate acts have a conscious meaning that the reader not only read the books, but they also combine between reading and another activity, which can increase or improve the understanding of texts.”

In addition, Alyousef (2006: 64) states;

“Reading can be seen as an “interactive” process between a reader and a text which leads to automatically or (reading fluency). In this process, the reader interacts dynamically with the text as she/he tries to elicit the meaning and where various kinds of knowledge are being used....”

Moreover Dallman in Hidayat (2011: 13) briefly defines reading is as an activity that involves the comprehension and interpretation of ideas symbolized by written or printed language.
From the point of views, it can be described that the emphasis of reading is more on the comprehension and interpretation. Therefore, in reading, the process of thinking is very urgent and vital. Therefore, reading is identical with thinking process.
